The Chief Operations and Financial Officer (COFO) is responsible for the overall operational and financial management of the firm, reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer. As a member of the Executive Committee, the COFO plays a critical leadership role in strategic planning and firm-wide decision making.
This individual is responsible for guiding and managing firm-wide operations in conjunction with the department heads, including finance, human resources, information systems, litigation support, records, and facilities management. The COFO ensures that the firm’s operations align with its strategic goals and financial objectives, driving efficiency, sustainability, and growth. The ideal candidate brings strong leadership experience —preferably in a law firm or professional services setting—and deep expertise in financial oversight, strategic planning, and operational management.
The COFO works in close partnership with the Executive Committee, Board of Directors, and department heads to ensure cohesive management of all business functions.
This position offers a hybrid work schedule, with four days in the office and one remote day each week.
Requirements
General Management and Strategic Planning
- Contributes to the development and execution of the firm’s strategic and operational plans.
- Leads firmwide improvement initiatives to enhance service delivery, reduce costs, and improve workflows.
- Develops and implements policies, procedures, and systems to support scalability and efficiency.
- Serves as a key member of the firm’s Executive Committee, contributing to long-term strategy and firm governance.
Facilities and Vendor Management
- Oversees space planning, office design, and vendor negotiations.
- Manages purchasing, inventory control, and records storage.
- Leads cost-benefit analyses and procurement strategies for equipment, furnishings, and services.
- Recommends and manages capital and expense budgets, ensuring cost control and accountability.
Financial Management
- Leads financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting.
- Conducts profitability and variance analysis to support informed decision-making.
- Oversees financial controls, policies, and compliance.
- Monitors unbilled time, disbursements, and accounts receivable to ensure timely billing and collections.
- Works with Firm’s insurance brokers to procure liability and malpractice insurance.
Human Resources Management
- Oversees performance evaluations, compensation planning, and salary administration.
- Manages staffing levels and resource allocation for legal, paralegal, and administrative teams.
- Promotes a positive workplace culture and supports professional development.
Technology and Systems Management
- Provides oversight for IT strategy, system integration and operational efficiency.
- Oversees key platforms: document management, records management, library management, information storage and retrieval, telecommunications, litigation support, legal practice systems and other system management functions
- Evaluates and recommends technology investments to improve internal processes.
- Ensures alignment of IT systems with operational goals and service delivery standards.
Qualifications And Experience
- Minimum of 5 years in a senior executive leadership role with demonstrated operational and financial leadership.
- Prior experience in a law firm or professional services environment strongly preferred.
- Proven track record in operations management, organizational planning, and financial strategy.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication abilities; able to foster collaboration across all levels.
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree (CPA, MBA, or CLM) preferred.

The salary range is $175,000 - $250,000
